The “International Symposium on Biomedical Informatics in Europe” presentations, are now available in pdf format at the Symposium website.

INFOBIOMED and SEMANTIC MINING are two of the European excellence networks funded by the European Commission during the 6th Framework Programme for the development of Biomedical Informatics in Europe. After three years of intense work, Ferran Sanz (INFOBIOMED network coordinator and director of the Biomedical Informatics Research Unit at the Municipal Institute of Medical Research, IMIM, and Pompeu Fabra University, UPF, in Barcelona) and Hans Åhlfeldt (SEMANTIC MINING network coordinator, Linköping University, Sweden) decided to join forces to present the results obtained in both projects within the framework of the first International Symposium on Biomedical Informatics in Europe. Other leading European projects in this field were included as well.

It is important to note that the Symposium, in addition to presenting the results of various projects, addressed today’s main topics in the field of Biomedical Informatics. These topics were organised into six sessions that described, for example, how calculation, simulation and modelling can help in the understanding and improvement of the treatment of carcinogenic processes, diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and cerebral aneurysms. The sessions also included new approaches, such as the use of the Playstation 3 Cell processor for complex molecular dynamic calculations.

Towards this end, 34 international experts have participated in this event. They represented twelve countries and come from highly-renowned institutions such as Oxford University, the University Hospital of Geneva, the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) and the University of New Mexico, amongst others. On a national level, experts from the following institutions participated: Pompeu Fabra University, University of Barcelona, Carlos III Health Institute, Municipal Institute of Medical Research, the Centre for Genomic Regulation and the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre. Including the organising networks, up to 7 European projects presented during one single event. This is a unique occurrence that has direct backing from the European Commission, as well as the support of important institutions such as Genoma España, the Spanish Technological Platform on Innovative Medicines and the International Association of Medical Informatics, amongst others.

We are pleased to inform you that all the authorized presentations from the “International Symposium on Biomedical Informatics in Europe”, are now available at the symposium website: http://www.infobiomed.net/symposium/registration.htm
