Ten students from seven countries have participated with successful results in the First INFOBIOMED Training Challenge, an innovative experience coordinated by the GRIB and organized by the European Network of Excellence INFOBIOMED to promote the consolidation of Biomedical Informatics (BMI)
During the 1st INFOBIOMED Training Challenge (from 12th to 16th of September), the ten participants have been working together in two teams of 5 participants that have a widely varying but complementary backgrounds relevant to Biomedical Informatics. Each group has worked on the basis of a single case study related to a research problem.
On the last day of the course, and after having listened to the presentations of both teams, the Jury of the Training Challenge has made an assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the two research plans proposed and has decided to give the prize ex-aequo to both teams, since both presented excellent work. The prize, that was originally a mobility grant of one month to the members of the winning team, has then converted into a 15-day stay grant for all ten participants.
The participants have emphasized that thanks to the Training Challenge they have gained a big respect to each other and to each other´s expertises and they have also learnt the advantages (and difficulties) of working in an interdisciplinary team to approach a complex problem.
The Training Challenge has mostly taken place in L’Hostal de la Glòria in Viladrau, a small village located in El Montseny Nature Park, 70 Kms. away from Barcelona. The opening and closing of the event has taken place in Barcelona, in the Research Unit on Biomedical Informatics premises.
